Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed (WPM)?

On average, people type around 40 words per minute (WPM). Professional typists usually reach 65–75 WPM, and highly skilled or competitive typists can exceed 100–120+ WPM. Accuracy matters just as much as raw speed — a fast test with many errors is less useful than a slightly slower, highly accurate one. See our full typing speed benchmarks by age for more detail.

How is WPM calculated on MonkeyTypeHub?

WPM is calculated using the standard formula: (correct characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. A "word" is standardized as 5 characters, including spaces, which is the industry-standard method most typing tests use so results are comparable across different tools.

Is MonkeyTypeHub really free?

Yes. MonkeyTypeHub is completely free, with no signup, no account required, and no hidden limits on how many tests you can take.

Do I need an account to appear on the leaderboard?

No account is needed. After finishing a Time or Words mode test, just enter a name to submit your score to the public leaderboard.

What's the difference between WPM and Raw WPM?

WPM only counts correctly typed characters. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, including mistakes, so it reflects your actual typing pace regardless of accuracy.

Which test mode should I use to practice?

Time mode is best for measuring consistent speed under pressure. Words mode is best for tracking a fixed amount of text. Quote mode adds natural sentence flow. Zen mode is best for relaxed, timer-free practice. For a structured plan, see our 30-day typing speed guide.
