Average Typing Speed by Country
It’s a natural question once you know your own WPM: is that number typical for someone in your country, or does typing speed vary a lot around the world? The honest answer is that reliable, directly comparable global data is surprisingly thin, but the patterns that do show up are worth understanding.
Why this is harder to measure than it looks
Most large-scale typing statistics come from English-language typing tests, which immediately skews any country comparison. A native English speaker and someone typing fluently in their second language are working with different levels of automatic word recognition, regardless of raw keyboard skill. Sample sources matter too: a stat pulled from a specific typing website reflects the people who chose to use that site, not a country’s population as a whole.
What the available patterns suggest
With those caveats in mind, a few broad patterns show up repeatedly across surveys and typing platforms:
- Countries with widespread early English-medium computer use tend to report higher average WPM on English tests, since typing fluency in a language correlates with overall fluency and exposure to it.
- Tech-heavy urban populations tend to skew faster than national averages, largely due to occupation. Software and office-heavy job markets simply mean more people typing all day, every day.
- Age of first exposure to a keyboard seems to matter more than nationality itself. Populations where children start typing earlier tend to show higher average speeds in adulthood, which is really a practice-hours effect wearing a geography label.
What this doesn’t mean
None of this means someone from a “faster typing” country is destined to type quickly, or that someone elsewhere has a ceiling on their speed. The underlying driver, in essentially every serious study on typing speed, is accumulated keyboard exposure and touch-typing technique, not geography or native language on its own. Country-level averages are really averages of practice habits and occupational exposure that happen to cluster by region.
Your number is still the one that matters
Country averages are interesting context, but they’re a poor substitute for knowing your own baseline. Run a test to see where you actually stand, and if you want to track improvement over time rather than compare yourself to a national average, the leaderboard gives you a more immediate, and more motivating, point of comparison: real people, recent scores, not a decades-old survey number.
