Why Is the Keyboard Called QWERTY?
QWERTY is just the name for the first six letters on the top-left letter row of most keyboards, and the layout’s origin has almost nothing to do with typing speed, which surprises most people once they learn it.
Built for mechanical typewriters, not speed
QWERTY was patented in the 1870s by Christopher Latham Sholes for early mechanical typewriters. Those machines used physical metal arms that struck the paper, and typing common letter pairs too quickly and close together could cause the arms to jam. The QWERTY layout deliberately separated some frequently used letter pairs to reduce jamming, not to help typists go faster.
Why it never got replaced
Alternative layouts, most notably Dvorak, have been proposed since the 1930s and are claimed to offer faster typing by putting more common letters under stronger fingers. But QWERTY had already become the standard on typewriters, then computers, and switching costs, retraining an entire population of typists, muscle memory, existing keyboards, always outweighed the modest speed gains alternatives promised.
Does layout actually affect speed today?
Modern research is mixed on how much layout alone affects top speed once someone is fully trained on it. What’s clearer is that switching layouts as an experienced QWERTY typist involves a real, sometimes lengthy, retraining period, during which speed drops significantly before any potential benefit shows up.
