How to Use Custom Text Mode for Typing Practice

Random word lists are great for general practice, but sometimes you need to type your own text — an essay, a script, an email you’re drafting, your own notes, or code comments — and measure how fast and accurately you can get through it.

What Custom Text mode is for

Custom Text mode lets you paste in any text of your choosing and turns it into a typing test. Instead of random words, you’re typing content that actually matters to you — which is useful in a few specific situations:

• Practicing a script or speech you need to memorize or deliver, so you build familiarity with the exact wording while also training your typing.
• Testing yourself on your own writing — useful for writers and students who want to see how fast they can transcribe or retype a draft.
• Practicing domain-specific vocabulary (medical terms, legal language, code snippets) that generic word lists don’t cover.
• Typing out study notes as a way of reinforcing memory while also building speed.

How to use it

1. Go to the MonkeyTypeHub homepage and select the Custom Text mode from the mode bar.
2. Paste or type your text into the box that appears.
3. Click “start typing this text” and begin typing exactly as you would on any other test — live WPM, accuracy, and the results graph all work the same way.
4. Press Tab to restart the same text, or switch modes to return to random words, quotes, or timed tests.

Tips for getting the most out of it

• Keep your custom text reasonably long (a paragraph or more) so the WPM calculation has enough data to be meaningful — very short snippets can produce noisy results.
• If you’re practicing for a specific real-world task (like transcription), use text that matches that task’s actual difficulty — punctuation, numbers, and mixed case included.
• Re-run the same custom text a few times in a row to see your consistency score improve as the specific text becomes familiar — a good way to separate “true” typing speed from “memorization” speed.
